It's More Than a Bucket of Minnows

Usually I am here to help
people  out as  much  as
possible    with    fishing,
new tactics, where to go
and to generally just put
people on fish  as  much
as  possible.   Tonight  I
learned  something  that
you   really   don’t   read
about.       That’s      the
friendships and loves you develop when ice fishing. For you
fathers out there you might want to listen up.

I never missed a fishing opener, and it has always been spent
with my father and grandpa. He could have left me at home,
but he didn’t. He didn’t have to give me my first Zebco 303 to
use at Moore Lake, but he did. He didn’t have to teach me
how tie Trilene knots, Palomar knots, lindy rigs and spinner
rigs, but he did. He didn’t have to bundle me up to go out ice
fishing, but he did. He didn’t have to do any of this, but he
cared and loved me and still does.

I can remember every trip we went on, all the walleyes,
crappies and whatever else we chased. I can remember all
the memories we have had, the heckling about missing fish,
cursing at the Vikings game on the radio and generally just
spending time together, there is no substitute for that.

My dad and I don’t always see eye to eye, but you know what,
a day out on the lake always smoothes things over, your
problems don’t follow you onto the boat or into the icehouse. I
am very thankful for all the trips I have been on, I don’t always
say thank you, it can be hard to remember, but I will give him
the hot lure if he asks. I know your son or daughter is thankful
for going too.

So next time you dads get the chance to go out fishing, take
your boy or girl along too. I guarantee they will grow up too
fast for you. Listen to the game, let her use the minnow scoop
as a microphone, and have a blast, it will be over before you
know it. Just ask my dad, it’s harder and harder to get trips
scheduled together now; school, football, girls, work and
generally just being a kid. Enjoy it while it lasts. It made a
world of a difference in my life, I am sure it will make a
difference in your son or daughters too!
